Two towns grew into one by the strait. A port at Teluk Betung on the bay and a market at Tanjung Karang in the hills grew together over time into a single city at the tip of Sumatra, the great crossing point to Java. The volcano changed the coast.
In the great eruption of Krakatoa long ago, the sea rose in a wall and swept the shore, and the coast towns were rebuilt above the water it had reached. People poured in from Java. Over the years many families crossed the narrow strait to settle Lampung's land, clearing forest for coffee and pepper, until the region filled with farms and the city swelled.
The port tied the islands together. Ferries and roads carried the trade of two great islands through the town, and Bandar Lampung grew into the busy capital of Lampung, keeping its bays, its hills, and its view of the volcano. The ferries still cross the strait.
