Where to stay in Manokwari
Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Manokwari keeps its beds close to the water. The shorefront along Doreri Bay carries most of the town's rooms, within walking reach of the Co-Cathedral of St. Augustine and of the jetties where boats leave for Mansinam Island. Choose that strip if the Gospel sites are why you came.
The second choice climbs inland, onto the quieter streets under Taman Wisata Alam Gunung Meja Manokwari, where protected forest on the flat crown of Gunung Meja begins at the end of the road. Birdwatchers usually keep going. Homestays in the Hatam and Sougb villages above the town put the ridges of the Arfak Mountains within a dawn walk, and they are chosen for the bowerbirds rather than for comfort.
Rooms up there are few and plain. Anyone heading for the mountains should fix those nights before leaving the coast, because the villages hold almost nothing spare. The airport lies close enough to the streets that a night in Manokwari makes the sensible bracket at each end of a trip across Papua Barat.
Beyond the town the Manokwari Regency thins out fast, and the road villages keep next to nothing for travellers, so the workable pattern is a base on the bay with day runs out to the forest and the ridges.

What is Manokwari known for?
Kota Injil is the name Manokwari answers to across Papua, the City of the Gospel, after the missionaries who came ashore on Mansinam Island. Faith still orders the calendar. The town holds one seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manokwari-Sorong, and each February pilgrims cross Doreri Bay to that small island offshore.
Administration is the other half of the story, since Manokwari runs Papua Barat as its capital while doubling as the seat of the Manokwari Regency around it. Birdwatchers come for the Arfak Mountains behind.
What are the main landmarks in Manokwari?
Three places carry the town's story. Taman Wisata Alam Gunung Meja Manokwari wraps the flat-topped hill at the back of the streets in protected forest, the nearest green walk to the harbour. Out on Mansinam Island, the Mansinam Museum keeps the record of the mission that gave Manokwari its second name.
Faith has a building in the town as well. The Co-Cathedral of St. Augustine serves the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manokwari-Sorong from the shore side. Behind everything stand the Arfak Mountains, where birdwatchers climb toward Mount Arfak for bowerbirds and birds of paradise.
What is the history of Manokwari?
European charts knew this shore long before Indonesia did, writing the place as Dory, Doréry or Dorey. The names shadow Doreri Bay. Christianity reached the bay in 1855, when two German missionaries stepped ashore on Mansinam Island, and pilgrims still cross the water each February to mark the landing.
That day gave the town its byname. Kota Injil, the City of the Gospel, is what much of Papua calls Manokwari, and the Mansinam Museum holds the objects and the paper record of the mission that earned it. Dutch rule ran this coast for far longer, ending only when Western New Guinea passed to Indonesia in 1963.
The province came much later. Papua was split in 2003, the western half taking the name Irian Jaya Barat before it was renamed Papua Barat in 2007, and Manokwari has served as its capital throughout. The map moved again in 2022, when Southwest Papua broke away with the western regencies and left a smaller province behind, with Sorong now on the far side of the Bird's Head Peninsula.
City status never came. Manokwari counts among the seven provincial capitals in Indonesia that are still governed as towns, and the plan to cut it loose from the Manokwari Regency as a city of its own stalled once a national moratorium on new regencies and cities took hold from 2013. The Co-Cathedral of St. Augustine and the churches around it remain the older institution.
Where is Manokwari?
Manokwari lies just south of the equator on the northern coast of the Bird's Head Peninsula, the western limb of Papua. The ground is low. Streets run back from Doreri Bay across a shelf barely above the sea, with the flat crown of Gunung Meja standing over them and the Arfak Mountains rising steeply behind.
Mansinam Island sits offshore. Past the first ridges the interior of Papua Barat turns to rainforest almost at once.
What is the climate of Manokwari?
The equator passes just north of the town, and that settles the year. Heat and humidity hold from one month to the next, so the calendar is read in rainfall rather than in temperature, with the heaviest stretch falling between about November and April. Nights stay warm.
The Arfak Mountains wring cloud out of the sea air and drop it on the slopes above Manokwari, which leaves the ridges wetter and cooler than the shore of Doreri Bay. Dry spells are short.
How do you get to Manokwari?
Rendani Airport lies at the edge of the town, and nearly everyone arrives through it. Flights link Manokwari to Sorong on the far side of the Bird's Head Peninsula, to Jayapura along the Papua coast, and to Makassar for onward connections through Indonesia. Ships still count.
Pelni liners call at the port on their long circuits through the eastern islands, and small boats cross Doreri Bay to Mansinam Island in minutes. Roads out of the Manokwari Regency run up into the Arfak Mountains and stop where the ridges do.
