What is the history of Padang?
Padang grew as a trading port on the Sumatran coast. For centuries it shipped the gold, pepper, and coffee of the Minangkabau highlands to the world, and Dutch, Chinese, and Indian traders settled by the river mouth, building the shophouses of the old town. Its culture came from the highlands.
The Minangkabau people, whose homeland lies in the mountains above, gave the city its language, its food, and its horn-roofed houses, and Padang became their outlet to the sea. Colonial rule and war came in turn. The Dutch held Padang as a chief port of their Sumatran empire, and it passed through the upheavals of the twentieth century and the fight for Indonesian freedom.
Even the earth has shaken the city. A great earthquake struck Padang in 2009, and the town rebuilt along its risky coast, keeping watch on the sea and the mountains. The old shophouses still line the river.
