Kendari Bay splits the choice. Rooms on the bay side sit closest to the port and to the water traffic that gives the city its rhythm, and they suit anyone whose trip starts or ends on a ship. Distances inside Kendari stay short by the standards of a provincial capital, and two or three nights rarely need more than one base.
Inland blocks trade the view for proximity to the provincial offices, the universities, and the State Museum of Southeast Sulawesi Province. Either choice puts the other within easy reach. The airport edge is the third option.

The dated record begins in 1831. Administration followed trade. Kendari became the seat of Southeast Sulawesi, and the offices, schools, and colleges that a provincial capital needs were built here. Kota Kendari is the formal Indonesian name.
