The streets are newer than everything around them. The Monastery of the Holy Cross held its ground in the valley long before the houses of Neve Granot were laid out above it, and Jerusalem had already been rebuilt once as the Roman colony Aelia Capitolina many centuries earlier. Institutions came later to the ridge, the Israel Museum among them, and housing filled the ground behind.
