What is the history of Connaught Place?
Connaught Place took shape as the imperial capital rose around it. Work began in 1929 and finished in 1933, giving New Delhi a Georgian marketplace named for the Duke of Connaught and laid out by Robert Tor Russell in two great rings. The name later shifted.
Officials renamed the hub Rajiv Chowk in 1995, though the older label held fast in daily speech, and the district kept its role as the commercial pivot of the capital beside landmarks such as St. Stephen's Church.
