What are the main landmarks in Halasuru?
Halasuru keeps its sights around the water and the old temple grounds. Ulsoor Lake anchors it. The tank was raised by Kempe Gowda II and remains the only Gowda-built water body left in Bengaluru, its islands and bathing steps still edging the district.
Just west of the shore stands the Halasuru Someshwara Temple, a Vijayanagara-style shrine whose hall carries a mantapa of 48 carved pillars. Quieter still is the Ramakrishna Math, a monastery set back from the traffic of Old Madras Road.
What is the history of Halasuru?
Halasuru took its name from the jackfruit orchards that once grew beside the lake, the Kannada halasu that British tongues wore down to Ulsoor. The land came early. Vijayanagara rulers gifted the village to the Gowda line, and Kempe Gowda II dug the tank that still carries the district's older name.
Then the soldiers arrived. The first British military station in the settlement was raised in Halasuru in 1807, drilling the cantonment street grid that still shapes the lanes between Mahatma Gandhi Road and the shore of Ulsoor Lake.
