Zakho District takes in the ground around the city, and Zakho Fort marks a defensive position in it that long predates the road running to the crossing.
What is the climate of Zaxo?
A temperate zone covers Zaxo. Zaxo sits north of the equator within it, close enough to the frontier with Turkey that the country on both sides of Ibrahim Khalil shares one set of conditions rather than two. Winter and summer both register.

Ibrahim Khalil is the way in. Traffic driving from Turkey into Iraq uses that crossing as its main road entry, and Zaxo lies a few kilometres beyond it, which makes the city the first stop for most people arriving by car. The road carries on from there.
Duhok Governorate spreads inland, and Zakho District is the first stretch a driver crosses before the rest of the Kurdistan Region opens up.
