Sanābād, Mashhad — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Sanabad Street runs corner to corner across Sanābād, a neighbourhood of Mashhad in District 1, known for Takhti Stadium and the metro stop at Saadi Square.

About Sanābād

Where to stay in Sanābād

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

Sanābād puts a bed in a working quarter of Mashhad's District 1, with Saadi Metro Station on Mashhad Metro Line 2 at the eastern corner and Sanabad Street carrying the shops through the middle. The Imam Reza Shrine is elsewhere. It stands about two and a half kilometres east, past the quarter's boundary, so evenings here belong to the neighbourhood rather than to the crowds at the gates.

Alton Tower and the Howeizeh Cinema face Daneshgah Street, and Imam Reza University sits a short way off the same street. If you would rather walk to a metro platform than to a shrine gate, stay here.

About Sanābād

What are the main landmarks in Sanābād?

Takhti Stadium stands at the northern edge of Sanābād, a football ground of fifteen thousand seats beside the Takhti Sport Center and the Hasheminejad Swimming Pool off Takhti Square. The Oghaf Garden holds the green ground. Sanabad Mosque keeps a quieter address mid-quarter, a little off Sanabad Street.

Daneshgah Street carries the southern edge, and the Howeizeh Cinema, Alton Tower and Imam Reza University all sit along it. Saadi Metro Station marks the eastern point at Saadi Square.

What is the history of Sanābād?

Sanābād carries a village name older than Mashhad itself. That village held the palace of Hamid ibn Qahtaba in the early third century AH, Harun al-Rashid was buried in its hall, and Ali ibn Musa al-Rida was laid in the same ground; Mashhad grew around that grave. The old ground lies about two and a half kilometres east of this quarter, well outside it.

What wears the name here is younger. Takhti Stadium was called Zibandeh and then Saadabad Stadium before its present name, Alton Tower went up in 2009, and Saadi Metro Station opened at Saadi Square on 20 March 2018.

Where is Sanābād?

Sanābād sits in Mashhad's District 1 between Ebne Sina Street to the west and Abkooh Street to the northeast, with Daneshgah Street closing the south side.
