Galleries argue for somewhere else. The Museum of Art, Kōchi and the Museum of Art Warakoh give a second quarter its character, and a bed near them is the better choice if paintings, and not fortifications, are the reason for coming.
Both sides are workable in one stay. Ryōma's Birthplace Memorial Museum makes a third case. The streets it commemorates give the museum its subject, and staying among them turns the visit toward biography rather than toward architecture or art.
Families should look further out. Wanpark Kochi Animal Land and the Kochi MIRAI Science Center are the two addresses aimed squarely at a day with children, and they justify a bed away from the centre in a way the museums do not. Kōchi spreads over about 309 square kilometres.
That is a lot of city, so the gap between the castle and the outer attractions is the thing to check before a booking is confirmed.

What that year produced was an administrative Kōchi rather than a new settlement, since the ground it enclosed had been organised around the castle long before any modern council sat in it.
