Where you stay in Osh turns on the bazaar or the mountain. The centre by the river keeps the great market, the mosques, and the museums within a walk, and staying downtown suits anyone here for the town. The mountain rises to the west.
Traders open their stalls at dawn. Out toward the mountain and the valley, the town gives way to the quiet slopes, the pilgrim paths, and the roads into the Fergana country. A room away from the centre trades the market for the still hillsides, the cave shrines, and the wide green valley beyond.
The fields run flat for miles. Stay downtown for the bazaar, or out for the mountain. The holy rock and the old market hold the valley city.

What is the history of Osh?
Osh grew rich on the Silk Road. For thirty centuries caravans crossed the Fergana Valley through Osh, trading silk and horses between China and the west, and the town thrived on the passing trade. A mountain drew the faithful.
The rock of Sulaiman-Too became a place of pilgrimage, and a young prince named Babur built a small mosque on its summit. Babur went on to India. From this valley the prince rode south to found the Mughal empire, yet he wrote with longing of the fruit and streams of Osh.
The bazaar never closed. Down the centuries the great market by the river drew traders from across the valley, and Osh grew as the southern city of Kyrgyzstan, keeping its mountain, its market, and its ancient roads. The stalls still fill each dawn.

Where is Osh?
Osh lies in the far south of Kyrgyzstan, at the eastern edge of the Fergana Valley. The city sits on the Ak-Buura river as it runs down from the mountains, on the fertile floor of the great valley, with the five-peaked rock of Sulaiman-Too rising in its middle and the Pamir-Alay ranges standing to the south. The river runs cold from the peaks.

Osh has a warm, dry continental climate. Hot summers and cold winters cross the valley, with dry sunny heat in summer and snow on the ranges in winter. Summer bakes the valley floor.

Osh lies in the south of Kyrgyzstan, over the mountains from the capital. Flights land from Bishkek, and the long road winds south over the passes into the Fergana Valley. Bazaars line the streets.
