What is the history of Kyzylorda?
Kyzylorda grew on the Syr Darya. A fort rose on the river in the eighteen-hundreds to guard the crossing, and a town gathered around it on the caravan roads of the steppe. The railway made it a hub.
When the line was laid across the desert, Kyzylorda became a station and a market, and for a few years it served as the capital of Soviet Kazakhstan. The steppe became a space port. Out on the plains to the west, engineers built the great launch site of Baikonur, and the first man in space rose from that desert ground.
The old bard was honoured too. On the steppe stood the mausoleum of Korkyt Ata, the ancient maker of the kobyz, and Kyzylorda kept its river, its rice, and its old roads, deep in the south. The river still feeds the fields.
