What is the history of Oral?
Oral was a town of the Cossacks. In the sixteen-hundreds the Ural Cossacks built a fort on the great river at the edge of the empire, and a frontier town grew around it. The river marked the frontier.
On the far bank lay Asia and the steppe of the nomads, and the Cossacks held the line of the river for the tsar. A great rebellion rose here. In the seventeen-seventies the rebel Pugachev raised the Cossacks and besieged the town in a war that shook the empire.
The river and the steppe stayed. Down the years Oral lived by its river trade and its herds, and later by the oil and gas beneath the plains, and it grew as the western city of Kazakhstan, keeping its old quarter, its cathedral, and its steppe. The river still runs to the Caspian.
