What is the history of Trincomalee?
Trincomalee has drawn fleets for its harbour. For its magnificent bay, one of the greatest natural harbours on earth, the town was fought over by Portuguese, Dutch, and British in turn, each raising forts above the water. The harbour served a world war.
In the Second World War the Allied eastern fleet sheltered in the bay, and the town was raided from the sea, a far outpost of a global war. The temple has crowned the rock for ages. High on Swami Rock above the sea stands Koneswaram, an ancient shrine of Shiva thrown down by the Portuguese and raised again, drawing pilgrims to its cliff.
The coast turned to the traveler. In time the beaches of Nilaveli and Uppuveli and the whales offshore drew visitors to the bay, and Trincomalee kept its harbour, its fort, and its temple. The waves still break below the rock.
