Negombo grew on cinnamon and fish. The old town lived by the sea and the lagoon, and in Portuguese days it became a port for the cinnamon of the coast. The Dutch built canal and fort.
When the Dutch took the coast, they raised a fort at Negombo and dug a long canal to carry cinnamon down to Colombo. The faith took deep root here. From Portuguese times a strong Catholic community grew in the town, and so many churches rose that Negombo was called a little Rome.
The lagoon fed the town. Its fishers worked the lagoon and the sea in outrigger canoes, and the beach market filled each morning with the catch, so Negombo grew as a fishing town of the coast, keeping its lagoon, its churches, and its boats. The nets still dry on the sand.
