Around the harbour rose the quays, the offices, and the old villas, and the French named the port Diego Suarez, guarding the sea road to the east. The bay and the wild north drew travelers. Beyond the harbour lay the turquoise Emerald Sea and the sacred Sugarloaf islet, and inland rose Amber Mountain with its rainforest and waterfalls.
The land held rare wonders. Lemurs and chameleons filled the forests, and the red pinnacles of the Tsingy Rouge stood in the hills, so Antsiranana grew as the northern port and the way into the wild north, keeping its harbour, its bay, and its forests. The trade winds still fill the bay.
