Where to stay in Sagaing

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Two banks, one decision. Sagaing and Mandalay face each other across 20 km of the Irrawaddy River, so a bed in either one puts the pagoda hills within reach, and the difference is whether the monasteries or the larger city sets the rhythm of the day. Mornings suit the climb.

Rooms on the Sagaing side keep the covered staircases and Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda within a short move, which matters because the 240 m climb is easier before the middle of the day. Distance is the other factor. Anyone based in Mandalay crosses the river for the day and returns, and that works, though it spends the two best hours of light on the road and the bank rather than on the ridge above the Irrawaddy River.

The riverside ground below the hills is flat and quickly walked, and the covered staircases start from it, so a room near the water is not far from a room near the pagodas. The monastery quarter is not a hotel district in the ordinary sense, so expectations should be set against a working religious centre rather than a resort strip, and the classical names Jeyyapura and Atulavatī belong to the same place a modern room sits in. Book with the crossing in mind.

About Sagaing

What is Sagaing known for?

Buddhist monasteries and pagodas crowd the ridge above the Irrawaddy River, and that concentration, rather than any trade or administration, is what gives Sagaing its standing in Myanmar. Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda leads. Covered staircases run up the 240 m hill to the central pagoda, which anchors the whole ridge.

Older names survive too, Jeyyapura and Atulavatī among them. Mandalay lies across the water, so travellers usually reach the monastic hills as a day's move from the larger city.

What are the main landmarks in Sagaing?

One pagoda stands above the rest. Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda occupies the central height of the ridge, and covered staircases carry pilgrims up the 240 m hill from the level ground beside the Irrawaddy River. The monastery recorded as ဗားကရာဘုန်းကြီးကျောင်း is another of the named houses on the Sagaing side.

Neither the pagodas nor the monasteries stand alone; the whole ridge above the river reads as a single religious landscape rather than a set of separate sights.

What is the history of Sagaing?

The classical names come first. Sagaing is recorded as Jeyyapura and also as Atulavatī, and those older forms sit alongside the Burmese name that the city carries in Sagaing Region. Both belong to the same settlement above the Irrawaddy River.

What the record preserves most clearly is religious rather than dynastic: the hills along the ridge filled with monasteries and pagodas, and the city became an important monastic centre in Myanmar. Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda marks the middle of that religious growth, reached by covered staircases that climb the 240 m hill from the riverside ground below. Sagaing Region takes the city's name.

The monastery ဗားကရာဘုန်းကြီးကျောင်း is one of the named houses on the same hills, and Sagaing lies 20 km to the south-west of Mandalay, on the opposite bank of the Irrawaddy River. Pagodas and monasteries still crowd the ridge. Little else in the record is fixed.

No founding year attaches to Sagaing in the same way a charter attaches to a European town, and what stands instead is the accumulation on the hills: monasteries, pagodas, and the covered stairways that link them to the level ground. The ridge runs parallel to the Irrawaddy River, which set the line the monastic building followed.

Where is Sagaing?

The river sets everything. Sagaing occupies the bank opposite Mandalay, 20 km to the south-west of it, and a ridge of numerous hills runs parallel to the Irrawaddy River carrying pagodas and monasteries above the level ground. The central hill rises 240 m. Sagaing Region spreads out from the city, and the tropical band north of the equator sets the terms for the ground around it.

What is the climate of Sagaing?

The Irrawaddy River governs the year here. Sagaing sits in the tropical band north of the equator, so the sun stays high and the year divides more by rain than by any swing between cold and warm. Height helps a little.

The 240 m hill that carries Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda rises above the river flats, and its covered staircases are walked in every season. Mandalay shares the same weather across the water.

How do you get to Sagaing?

Most arrivals come through Mandalay. Sagaing lies 20 km to the south-west of it, on the far bank of the Irrawaddy River, which makes the crossing of the water the defining part of the journey rather than the distance itself. Sagaing Region continues beyond.

Once in the town, the pagoda hills are reached on foot: covered staircases run up the 240 m hill to Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda, and the monastic houses along the ridge are linked by the same stepped routes.
