About Sagaing Region

What is Sagaing Region known for?

The Ayeyarwady River forms much of the eastern and southern boundary of Sagaing Region, which makes the water the division's spine as well as its edge, and Monywa the place where the traffic settles. It is the second-largest of Myanmar's subdivisions. The region takes its name from Sagaing, but Monywa is the administrative capital and the largest city, so the map and the paperwork point at different towns.

Where is Sagaing Region?

The Ayeyarwady River draws the line. It forms a large part of the eastern boundary of Sagaing Region and much of the southern one as well, so the division is defined on two sides by moving water rather than by ridge or road. Mandalay Region lies across it.

That division touches Sagaing Region twice, on the east and again to the south, where Magway Region also comes up against the boundary. Kachin State and Shan State complete the eastern side. Between them these five neighbours hem in every side of Sagaing Region except the stretch that faces India.

Westward and northward the region runs to an international boundary, meeting Chin State first and then the Indian states of Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. Nothing about that edge is close to Monywa, and the division's own administration sits far from it. Sagaing Region is the second-largest subdivision in the country, and its shape stretches from the river plain around Monywa up into ground that faces Arunachal Pradesh, a span that no single road covers quickly.

The namesake town of Sagaing stands at the other end of that reach, down where the Ayeyarwady River turns along the Mandalay Region boundary. Monywa holds the middle, the one large city in that span.

What is Sagaing Region like?

The region answers to two towns. Sagaing gave the division its name and Monywa carries its administration, and in a place this large that difference matters more than it would in a compact one, because the two sit well apart. The Ayeyarwady River ties them.

Traffic along the water has always been the connective tissue of the eastern and southern edge, where Mandalay Region and Magway Region lie just over the boundary. Neither town speaks for the whole. Between the Indian frontier and the Magway Region boundary, Sagaing Region covers enough ground to hold several quite different countrysides.

The borderlands read differently. Where Sagaing Region meets Chin State and then Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, the ground is upland and the reference points change from river towns to frontier ones. Kachin State adds a third direction again.

Far more of Sagaing Region lies outside its towns than in them, so the texture of the place is set by countryside rather than by Monywa, large as that city is within the division. Shan State touches the same eastern flank, below Kachin State and above Mandalay Region.

What is the history of Sagaing Region?

Sagaing lent its name before Monywa took the office. The region is called after the town of Sagaing, while the administrative capital and largest city is Monywa, an arrangement that leaves the older name attached to the smaller place. The Ayeyarwady River explains both.

Settlement in this division has followed the water, which is why the towns that matter stand near the eastern and southern boundary rather than out toward Chin State or Nagaland.

What is the climate of Sagaing Region?

The Ayeyarwady River runs through a tropical belt, and the plain around Monywa sits low enough in it to take the full heat of the year. Height changes that. Toward Chin State and the Indian states of Nagaland and Manipur the ground rises, and the border country is cooler than the river towns on the far side of the region.

Kachin State edges the same high ground on the eastern side.

How do you get to Sagaing Region?

The Ayeyarwady River is the region's oldest road. Because the water forms much of the eastern and southern boundary, arriving from Mandalay Region or Magway Region means meeting Sagaing Region at the river rather than at a mountain pass. Monywa is where that traffic ends up.

Approaches from Chin State, Kachin State or the Indian states of Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh are a different proposition entirely, since the far side of the division is border country and a long way from the capital.
