The other option looks outward. Beds on the valley edge, where the ground begins to rise toward the Sierra Occidental, suit travellers who are treating Tepic as a stop between the highlands and the Nayarit Riviera rather than as the destination itself, and the road out is closer from there.
Both sides are the same city. Tepic is the seat of its municipality and the largest place in Nayarit, so the range of rooms is wider than anywhere else in the state, and the difference between the two areas is atmosphere and traffic rather than supply. The valley holds them both.
Anyone here for the coast will still sleep inland, because the Nayarit Riviera is reached from the city rather than shared with it.

What is the history of Tepic?
1531 is the founding year. Tepic is therefore among the older settlements of the region, laid out in a valley with the worn ridges of the Sierra Occidental standing over its inland side and green country running out from the streets. The cathedral followed.
The Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción became the fixed point of the town, and the oldest layer of the city is still the ground around it. Nayarit made it a capital. The state's government settled in Tepic, which also serves as the seat of the Tepic Municipality, and that double role explains why the regional institutions are concentrated in one valley city rather than spread across the state.

Where is Tepic?

What is the climate of Tepic?
Rain owns half the year. From April to November the valley turns muggy and wet, with the Sierra Occidental catching the weather that arrives off the tropical lowlands and dropping much of it on the city. The rest is sunshine.
Tepic keeps long bright spells outside those months, and the inland valley setting takes some of the edge off the tropical heat that sits on the coast.
