San Luis Potosí was born of a silver strike. When ore was found in the hills nearby at the end of the sixteenth century, a town rose on the plateau to work and ship the metal, taking the name of the Bolivian Potosí for its promised wealth. Silver made the city.
Convents, churches, and grand houses of carved stone rose on the mining fortunes through the years of the colony. The city stood on the great road north. As the hub of the Camino Real into the northern deserts, it gathered the trade of mines and missions across a vast country, and its plazas filled with the wealth of the altiplano.
Revolution stirred here too. It was from San Luis Potosí that Francisco Madero issued the plan that called Mexico to rise in 1910, and the city played its part in the war that followed. The old stone centre still stands.
