What is the history of Port Dickson?
The paperwork tells the story here. Port Dickson has been administered under four names in under a century, beginning with the Port Dickson Sanitary Board, which ran from 29 March 1928 until 28 February 1950 and set the shape of local government on this stretch of coast. Then came a rename.
The Port Dickson Town Board took over on 1 March 1950 and held the role until 30 November 1979. Status climbed with the town. The Port Dickson District Council succeeded the town board on 1 December 1979, widening the remit from the settlement to Port Dickson District as a whole, and it in turn gave way to the Port Dickson Municipal Council on 1 February 2002.
Each step upgraded the tier. The sequence from sanitary board in 1928 to municipal council reads as a compact record of a fishing and port settlement turning into a resort that Negeri Sembilan counts second only to Seremban. Lukut carries the older layer.
The Lukut Fort and Museum preserves a fortified site that predates every one of those councils, and it is the one place in Port Dickson where the past is a building rather than a date on a charter. The Army Museum adds a separate strand. Both sit inside a district whose written history is largely the history of who governed it.
