What is the history of George Town?
George Town began in 1786, when Francis Light claimed the island for the British East India Company and laid out a free port on its shore. The port grew rich almost at once. St. George's Church rose for the British, among the oldest of its kind in the region. The Francis Light Memorial still marks the founding. Wealth from the spice and tin trade filled the old town.
Chinese merchant families built ornate homes like the Pinang Peranakan Mansion, blending Malay and Chinese ways into a culture of their own.
