Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Beds gather in Warri and Uvwie. The two run into one another on the ground, and a room in either reaches the Museum, the Delta State Government House annex and the offices of the petroleum trade without a long drive across the built-up area. Udu and Okpe sit on the other sides.
Both are quieter, with guesthouses in place of hotel blocks, and they suit work pitched at the edges of the conurbation rather than at its middle. If you are here for the churches, a central Warri room is the practical base: Word of Life Bible Church, Estate Baptist Church, Avenue Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist church are all within reach of the same streets. Koko is the outlier.
Chief Nana's palace stands there, and the run out is better treated as an excursion than as a base, because rooms in Koko are thin on the ground. Humidity decides the rest. Warri lies in the Niger Delta, and rooms attached to the oil trade in Warri and Uvwie are built for steady power and cooling, while the smaller places in Udu and Okpe vary a good deal in what they hold through the hottest hours of the afternoon.
Book ahead outside the two main towns. Delta State's commercial weight keeps the better Warri and Uvwie rooms busy with business travel through much of the working week, which leaves less slack than the size of the four towns together would suggest.

What is the history of Warri?
Three peoples hold the ground. Warri is recorded as the indigenous territory of the Itsekiri, the Urhobo and the Ijaw, and that shared claim is the oldest thing set down about the city, older than any of the industry that later carried its name out of Nigeria. No founding year survives on the record.
What the sources keep instead is an order of events: settlement by those three communities, then the slow knitting of the town into the Niger Delta around it, and only afterwards the oil. Chief Nana's palace at Koko is the monument left from the era before the wells. Oil changed the scale of everything.
Warri became one of the major hubs of the petroleum industry in Nigeria, and the commercial weight it carries alongside Udu, Okpe and Uvwie as the commercial capital of Delta State grew out of that industry rather than out of any older charter or market right. An annex of the Delta State Government House was placed in the city in due course. That gave Warri an administrative face to set beside the commercial one, and it is the reason a city of the delta holds state business at all rather than leaving it entirely to the seat of Delta State.
Where is Warri?
Delta ground, not hills. Warri stands in the southwestern part of the Niger Delta, and Delta State around it takes its name from the same low, water-cut country, so the setting is one of flat approaches and short horizons rather than relief. Three neighbours press against it.
Udu, Okpe and Uvwie adjoin the city closely enough that the built-up area crosses between them without a clear break, which is why the four are read as a single urban whole.
What is the climate of Warri?
The delta keeps the air wet. Warri lies in the tropical band north of the equator, and the Niger Delta holds moisture over the city in a way that flattens the year into warm and warmer instead of into the four seasons a temperate calendar expects. Water marks the seasons here.
Anyone timing a visit to the Museum, or the run out to Chief Nana's palace at Koko, plans around the wet months rather than the thermometer, which shifts far less across the year than the rain does.
How do you get to Warri?
Warri is reached overland, in almost every case. Warri, Udu, Okpe and Uvwie sit so close together that reaching one of them is in practice reaching all four, and the overland approach across Delta State is how the great majority of visitors come in. Koko lies further out.
Getting to Chief Nana's palace means a separate run beyond the built-up area, one to plan as an excursion rather than as a link a traveller would use twice in a day.
