Birnin Kebbi worked as a caravan and riverside market before Jega took that trade, and the market side of town still sits beside the offices. If you come for emirate business or a state appointment, that is the side to book. Little of the town spreads far.
Dukku changes the calculation. The Nigerian Military 1st Battalion is quartered there, and traffic bound for the barracks keeps to that edge rather than the market lanes, so a bed near Dukku suits anyone whose business is with the army. Onward travel argues for a night in town instead.
Jega lies about 32 km southeast and Gwandu about 48 km east, both close enough for a day out from a Birnin Kebbi base, and Argungu sits within the same run of Kebbi country. Few visitors need two bases here.

What is the history of Birnin Kebbi?
Birnin Kebbi began as a Kebbi capital. The town held the seat of the Kebbi kingdom until 1805, when the Fulani jihad reached it and Abdullahi dan Fodio, brother of the jihad's leader and later Emir of Gwandu, burned it. What followed was a long demotion.
Absorbed into the Fulani Emirate of Gwandu, the town lost its political weight to Gwandu itself, some 48 km east, and lost its caravan and riverside market trade to Jega, about 32 km southeast at the head of navigation on the Zamfara River, a tributary of the Sokoto. Argungu took the crown. The traditional seat of the king of Kebbi passed there in 1827, and the Kebbi capital formally relocated after Gwandu's conquest in 1831.
Recovery came through the emirate. Emir Haliru was inaugurated at Birnin Kebbi in 1906, and from that point the town served as the headquarters of the Gwandu Emirate rather than as its eclipsed predecessor. Statehood finished the job.
Nigeria created Kebbi in 1991 and made Birnin Kebbi its capital, fixing in law the standing that the Gwandu Emirate had already restored. Hausa and Fulani custom carried through all of it, and Islam stayed the frame of public life in the town and across the Kebbi State around it.
Where is Birnin Kebbi?
Savanna surrounds the town. Birnin Kebbi sits in the north-west of Nigeria, on savanna country drained by the Sokoto, whose tributary the Zamfara River carries the water past Jega. Gwandu lies about 48 km east and Jega about 32 km southeast.
Water made the difference once. The head of navigation on the Zamfara sat at Jega, which took the caravan and riverside market trade that Birnin Kebbi had carried, and left the capital an inland administrative town.
What is the climate of Birnin Kebbi?
The harmattan sets the dry months. Dust hauled off the Sahara hangs over the Sokoto basin from about December, dimming the sun and dropping the night temperature while the afternoons stay hot. Rain comes with the West African monsoon.
It builds from about May, holds through the high summer, and leaves the savanna around Birnin Kebbi green well after the last storms pass.
