What is the history of Abeokuta?
Abeokuta was founded as a refuge in the rocks. In the wars that broke the old Yoruba country two centuries ago, bands of the Egba people fled to these granite hills and sheltered in the caves of a great rock, and there they built a new town. The rock gave them safety.
From the height of Olumo Rock the people watched for their enemies and held them off, and the town they founded took the name Abeokuta, the place under the rock. The town grew strong and free. It gathered many Egba towns into one, held off its enemies and even the armies of Dahomey, and welcomed traders, missionaries, and returning freed slaves, becoming a busy Yoruba city.
Its cloth grew famous. The dyers of Abeokuta made a fine indigo adire cloth prized across the land, and the city gave the country famous sons, keeping its rock, its river, and its old palaces through the years. The great rock still guards the town.
