What is the history of Ile-Ife?
Ile-Ife is where the Yoruba say the world began. In their belief, the god Oduduwa came down here to make the dry land and found the human race, and Ife became the first city and the mother of all the Yoruba kingdoms. Its kings ruled a golden age.
Between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries the sculptors of Ife cast heads and figures in bronze and clay of astonishing lifelike grace, an art among the finest ever made in Africa. The city stayed the spiritual heart of the Yoruba. Even as other kingdoms grew richer and stronger, Ife kept its sacred place, and its ruler, the Ooni, remained a holy king to all the Yoruba people.
The old art was found again. Scholars uncovered the great bronze heads and brought them to light, and the world marvelled at the skill of Ife. The shrines and groves still fill the town.
