Rooms thin out quickly beyond the centre. Ilero and Igbope, which carry Calvary Baptist Church Ilero and Emmanuel Baptist Church, Igbope, are settlements rather than bases, and anyone heading that way is better off booking in Oyo and driving out. Oyo-Ile offers nothing to sleep in.
The old capital to the north was deserted during the Yoruba Civil Wars, so it is a place to visit from town rather than to stay in, reached from New Oyo like the rest of Oyo State. The title of Alaafin of Oyo carried the authority of the empire into the new site, and it remains the office of the town's ruler. Its people were Yoruba from the start. Two names divide the story.
Locals call the place New Oyo precisely to distinguish it from Oyo-Ile, the Old Oyo abandoned to the north, and the pair are still spoken of together. Mission work left the clearest physical record. First Baptist Church, Oyo anchors a network that reaches Awe, Ilero and Igbope, while Araromi, Gambari and Olunlyo Ariyo Road each carry a congregation inside the town.
