Sokoto grew as a capital. The Sokoto Caliphate had its seat here, and the city's later titles, capital of the north-western states, then capital of Sokoto State, continued a role it already held. Its Sultan remained.
That office still carries religious authority for Muslims across Nigeria, which is why the city is called the Seat of the Caliphate. Learning followed the seat. Sokoto became an important centre of Islamic scholarship in Nigeria, a standing that has outlasted the political arrangement which first gave the city its weight.
Trade ran alongside all of it. Hides, skins, leather work and kola nuts built the trading side of the city, and that list has changed little in the accounts that name Sokoto. The Waziri Junaidu History & Culture Bureau keeps that record in the city itself.
