Schothorst, Amersfoort — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Schothorst is a leafy Amersfoort district between Liendert, Landgoed Schothorst and De Koppel, with two tall towers on the Valleikanaal.

About Schothorst

Where to stay in Schothorst

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Schothorst is residential through and through. Detached houses with gardens, terraced rows and apartment blocks fill the streets between Liendert and De Koppel, and the two towers on the Valleikanaal, De Waaier at 14 storeys, De Vuurtoren at 16, mark the quarter from a distance. Those towers hold flats, not hotel rooms.

If a quiet, leafy base beside the Valleikanaal suits you, Schothorst answers, with Landgoed Schothorst adjoining.

About Schothorst

What are the main landmarks in Schothorst?

Two towers dominate. De Waaier rises 14 storeys and De Vuurtoren 16, both standing along the Valleikanaal, and between them they give Schothorst the tallest residential silhouette in Amersfoort. Three more listed buildings follow: the Heilig Kruiskerk, Brandpunt and De Hoeksteen.

Woonhuis De Waal adds a single dwelling to the register, while the ground holding the remains of the fortified house Emiclaar reaches back well before any of it.

What is the history of Schothorst?

Emiclaar came first. The site preserving the remains of that fortified house is the oldest thing on Schothorst's register, older by centuries than any street around it. Everything else is recent by comparison: the district was built out in the 1970s and 1980s as Amersfoort expanded, filling the ground between Liendert, Landgoed Schothorst and De Koppel with detached houses, terraces and apartment blocks.

The towers came with it. De Waaier and De Vuurtoren stand along the Valleikanaal, and Heilig Kruiskerk, Brandpunt and De Hoeksteen serve the streets that resulted.

Where is Schothorst?

Schothorst sits in central Amersfoort between Liendert, Landgoed Schothorst and De Koppel, with the Valleikanaal running past its towers.
