What is the history of Grønland?
Grønland holds the oldest ground in Oslo. Here lay the Middelalderbyen Oslo, the medieval town that stood before the city moved west, and the ruins of the Nonneseter kloster recall a convent of that age. Later the quarter filled with workers, then with immigrants from many lands, until it became one of the most mixed neighbourhoods of the whole city.
That long layering of arrivals gave it character. The Jødisk Museum i Oslo records one community among the many who made their home here.
Where is Grønland?
Grønland sits in southern Oslo. Pressed close to the city centre on its eastern flank, it has the museum quarter of Tøyen just uphill to the north-east and Grünerløkka running along the river to the north, with the ground falling away below toward the harbour and the old medieval shore.
