Hamna belongs to the newer, outer growth of Tromsø. As the centre on Tromsøya filled and the municipality of Tromsø needed room, building pushed north-east along the island toward the Tromsøysundet strait, and quarters like this and Stakkevollan came up to take the spillover of housing. The harbour name points to its working frontage on the sound.
