What is Nepalgunj known for?

Nepalgunj is the headquarters of Banke District in the Bheri region, and people come in from the surrounding country for official business and for the shops that the border keeps well stocked. Rupaidiha lies just beyond the frontier. Many Nepalis cross there to buy, and vegetables and other supplies arriving from Uttar Pradesh stay cheap on this side.

Bicycles and rickshaws carry most of it.

What are the main landmarks in Nepalgunj?

Rupaidiha does the work of a landmark here. The market town sits just across the frontier from Nepalgunj, and shoppers crossing for vegetables and household goods treat it as the main thing to go and see. Beyond that crossing, the business is administrative.

Nepalgunj's shape comes from absorption: Udayapur, Bhawaniyapur, Piprahawa, Jaispur, Paraspur, Indrapur, Khaskarkado, Basudevpur, Manikapur and Puraina were folded into the sub-metropolitan city, with Puraini added afterwards and one ward passing to Janaki Rural Municipality. Banke District's offices fill the remainder.

What is the history of Nepalgunj?

Nepalgunj's history is administrative. The settlement grew on the Terai plains as the headquarters of Banke District, and its position beside the frontier with Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh gave it a trading role that outlasted every reorganisation of the map around it. Boundaries kept moving.

Ten neighbouring Village Development Committees, Udayapur, Bhawaniyapur, Piprahawa, Jaispur, Paraspur, Indrapur, Khaskarkado, Basudevpur, Manikapur and Puraina, were joined to the town on Paush 28 of 2071 in the Bikram Sambat calendar, the step that made it a sub-metropolitan city. Puraini came next. It was added on Paush 21 of 2072, a year after the first round, extending the built-up area further into the surrounding countryside.

A nationwide restructuring of local levels then redrew things again. Ward 23 was transferred out to Janaki Rural Municipality, while ward 7 of Hirminiya moved the other way and became part of Nepalgunj, leaving the city with roughly 86 square kilometres of Terai ground. The border did not move.

Whatever the ward lines did, the crossing to Rupaidiha stayed where it was, and the traffic of shoppers and officials through Banke District's headquarters carried on much as before.

Where is Nepalgunj?

The Terai plains set the terms. Nepalgunj spreads flat across roughly 86 square kilometres of Banke District, with nothing to break the ground, and the same plain carries on into Uttar Pradesh without a natural edge at the frontier. Kohalpur lies 16 km north.

Ghorahi is far further off, about 153 kilometres away, which leaves the town closer to Bahraich district across the border than to much of its own hinterland.

What is the climate of Nepalgunj?

Nepalgunj takes its climate from the subtropical Terai. The town lies on flat Terai ground that carries on unbroken into Uttar Pradesh, so its conditions match those of Bahraich district across the frontier more closely than anywhere else in Banke District. Elevation offers nothing here.

Kohalpur, 16 km north, stands on the same plain, and the subtropical band holds across the whole of it.

How do you get to Nepalgunj?

Road and air both work. Its position makes onward travel simple, with roads and flights reaching much of the surrounding region, and that convenience is a large part of what brings people through Banke District's headquarters. The border crossing is the other way in.

Arrivals from Uttar Pradesh pass through Rupaidiha on the Indian side, a short distance out, while anyone heading the opposite way picks up the highway through Kohalpur, 16 km on, and continues toward Ghorahi about 153 kilometres beyond. Rickshaws and bicycles cover the rest.
