Above Butwal lay Palpa and the town of Tansen, old seats of the hill kingdoms, reached by the road up the gorge. A holy place lay on the plain. Not far to the south stood Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, drawing pilgrims from across the world.
The town grew into a city. In our own age Butwal swelled with trade and industry on the great east-west road, and it grew as the market city of the western Terai, keeping its bazaars, its gorge, and its roads. The trucks still climb the gorge.
