What is the history of Tauranga?
Tauranga was a Māori harbour of old. For centuries the Māori lived around this bay and held the cone of Mauao as a sacred place, and their canoes worked the sheltered waters. The missionaries came to the shore.
In the eighteen-hundreds a mission station rose by the harbour, and a small colonial town grew up beside the old Māori landing. Conflict marked the early years. The bay saw fighting in the wars between Māori and the Crown, and the memory of those days still lies over the land.
The orchards changed the country. In time the warm hills around Tauranga filled with kiwifruit and avocado, and the port grew to ship the fruit and timber, so Tauranga rose as the big town of the Bay of Plenty, keeping its mountain, its harbour, and its orchards. The surf still breaks below Mauao.
