For thousands of years the hills behind Sohar were dug for copper, and the smelters of the Magan land sent metal across the ancient seas. Sinbad sailed from this shore. The Omani sailors of Sohar were famed across the world, and the tales of Sinbad the sailor were tied to their voyages east.
The fort watched the sea. A whitewashed fort rose over the shore to guard the harbour, and Sohar grew as a port of the Batinah coast, keeping its fort, its beach, and its old sea trade. The dhows still work the gulf.

Sohar lies in the north of Oman, on the Batinah coast of the Gulf of Oman. The city sits on a flat coastal strip by the sea, between the water and the mountains, with the warm gulf and its beaches to the east and the high wall of the Hajar mountains rising inland to the west. The tide slides up the sand.
