What is Morobe Province known for?

The provincial capital is also the largest city, and the province around it takes in the Huon Peninsula, the Markham River and the coastal territories along the Huon Gulf. Language is the other headline. More than a hundred tongues are spoken across Morobe Province, Kâte and Yabem among them, which is a lot even by the standards of Papua New Guinea.

Where is Morobe Province?

Morobe Province covers close to thirty-four thousand square kilometres. Coast and river do the rest of the work. Three features do most of the defining: the Huon Peninsula, the Markham River with the delta at its mouth, and the coastal territories that follow the Huon Gulf.

Open water is never distant here. Papua New Guinea's northern coast forms the whole seaward edge of the province, so the shoreline does as much to define the province as anything inland. Nine administrative districts divide it.

That count says something about the spread: a province this large, with a peninsula on one flank and a river delta on the other, cannot be run from a single point, and Lae carries the administrative weight. The Markham drains the interior. Its delta reaches the Huon Gulf, and the low ground between the river and the gulf makes the flattest country the province has.

The Huon Peninsula takes the other flank. It pushes out from the same northern coast, giving Morobe Province a long and broken seaward margin rather than a straight one. Lae anchors all of it from the shore.

English and Tok Pisin carry the everyday exchange in the urban areas, Lae above all, which is what lets a province of a hundred tongues function as one economy. German left a trace too. In some areas pidgin forms of German are mixed into the local language, a survival that says as much about the province's past as any building would.

Nine administrative districts hold the whole arrangement. None of them is linguistically simple, and the Huon Peninsula and the Markham River valley each carry their own share of the hundred.
