Widzew has no single centre to stay in. Only the central-western part, the old village now called Stary Widzew, is built up in the ordinary urban way; the rest runs to industry, large housing estates, fields and forest. The Szosa Rokicińska has carried traffic through since the cotton mills arrived.

About Widzew
What are the main landmarks in Widzew?
Księży Młyn stands at the western edge, the mill complex Karl Wilhelm Scheibler built, with Edward Herbst's palace beside it and the Park Źródliska alongside. The Łódź-Olechów rail terminal spreads across the southeastern corner. Tytus Kopisch's house is counted with them.
What is the history of Widzew?
Widzew appears in the record in 1327, and again in 1387 in a document of the Kuyavian bishop Jan Kropidło, a duke of the Opole Piasts, who made a Łódź sołectwo out of the village of Łodzia and neighbouring Widzewnica. No founding date can be fixed. Until the 1870s the place supplied Łódź with food and raw material and housed factory workers up from the country.
Juliusz Kunitzer changed that when he looked for land for cotton works and found it here, beside the Szosa Rokicińska and the factory railway, with the Jasień to water the mills. Łódź took in the western, industrial part in 1906, with the new boundary running along what is now ulica Widzewska, and took more during the First World War in 1915.
Where is Widzew?
Widzew covers some ninety square kilometres on the eastern side of Łódź, the largest of the old districts. Fields and forest hold the northeast. The former district takes in Andrzejów, Mileszki, Nowosolna, Olechów-Janów, Stary Widzew, Zarzew and Widzew-Wschód.
