Where to stay in Văleni

The practical side of choosing where to sleep.

Piatra Neamț takes the bookings. Văleni sits roughly three kilometres south-east of the centre, so a stay here trades walking distance to a hotel desk for a quiet street under Cernegura and a five-minute drive back into the city. The locality is a quarter of houses and gardens, so check what is listed there rather than counting on a desk being open on arrival.

Piatra Neamț holds the hotels. Neamț County spreads out from the city, and DN15 leaves it south-east toward Bacău.

About Văleni

What are the main landmarks in Văleni?

Văleni has one listed ensemble, and Romania grades it at the top class. The register enters it as the ensemble of the former Peste Vale monastery on Strada Magnoliei: a wooden church dedicated to Schimbarea la Față, dated there to 1560 with eighteenth-century additions, plus a separate wooden bell tower standing immediately south of it. Walls of fir and oak beams sit on a stone footing, the altar apse is pentagonal, and one shingle roof runs over the whole.

The register lists nothing else here. Carved geometric bands frame the door and the windows, and the county culture directorate dates the church earlier still, to about 1538, putting the west porch at 1924.

What is the history of Văleni?

Ground at Văleni was worked long before the city reached it. Pottery of the Cucuteni culture and stone and flint tools from the Bronze Age came out of the Bolovoaia point here, alongside finds at Ciritei and at Lutărie elsewhere in the municipality. The wooden church came later, with Petru Rareș and then Alexandru Lăpușneanu named as its founders.

Icons matter most. The Neamț county culture directorate counts more than 150 of them traced to Văleni and argues from their stylistic unity that an icon painting school worked here for over two centuries, its survivors scattered to the museums of the Bistrița, Văratec, Agapia and Neamț monasteries. Văleni itself only joined the town in 1925, taken in together with Sărata and Vânători.

Where is Văleni?

The right bank of the Bistrița is where Văleni sits, on a plateau that runs up to the eastern flank of Cernegura and stops at the treeless slope. Cernegura tops out at 852 metres. Piatra Neamț fills an intramontane basin, and its eastern edge spills onto the Bistrița terraces and into the Cracău-Bistrița Depression, which puts Văleni in the municipality's southern corner, about three kilometres from the centre and four and a half from the commune of Dumbrava Roșie.
