What is the history of Novokuznetsk?
Novokuznetsk began as a fort of smiths. Cossacks built a wooden fort on the Tom long ago to hold the frontier of Siberia, and a small town of blacksmiths grew below it, giving the place its name. The writer came in exile.
The young Dostoevsky, sent east as a soldier, lived here for a time and married his first wife in the town's little church, before his fame. Steel made the modern city. In the Soviet years the state built a giant metal works by the river to smelt the coal and ore of the Kuznetsk basin, and a whole new city rose around it almost overnight.
Coal fed the furnaces. The rich seams of the Kuzbass fed the mills, and Novokuznetsk grew into one of the great steel and coal cities of Siberia, keeping its old fort, its works, and its river, its smoke drifting over the basin. The mills still glow by the Tom.
