Where to stay in Zheleznodorozhnyy

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Zheleznodorozhnyy keeps few beds of its own, so most visitors sleep elsewhere in Balashikha or in Moscow and ride out here for a morning. The station is what makes that work. Zheleznodorozhnaya station sits near the middle of the district on the Gorkovskoye line, and the Transfiguration Church at Savvino is a walk from the platform rather than a ride.

You want these streets if railway history and timber heritage are the reason you came. Pavlino and its old park lie a few kilometres west, outside these streets entirely.

About Zheleznodorozhnyy

What are the main landmarks in Zheleznodorozhnyy?

Zheleznodorozhnyy gathers its heritage around one church. The Transfiguration Church at Savvino went up in brick from 1868, and its interior and its gated fence are registered as heritage objects in their own right. Timber survives beside it.

The Polyakov House is the wooden survivor of the railway decades, the workers' barracks stands from the same years, and a Lenin monument holds the Soviet layer. Proletarskaya Street carries the district boulevard, where a monument to Dmitry Ryabushinsky was unveiled in 2011. Zheleznodorozhnaya station is the other set piece.

What is the history of Zheleznodorozhnyy?

Zheleznodorozhnyy began as Obiralovka, a station on the Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod line opened in 1861 with a settlement gathering at it. The name came from the Obiralov family. Rail work set the pattern, and the workers' barracks and the timber Polyakov House survive from those decades, while the Transfiguration Church at Savvino was rebuilt in brick from 1868.

Zhilgorodok followed the war. Two-storey timber houses went up in rows between 1944 and 1946, laid out under the architect Ivan Zholtovsky. The railway name arrived in 1939 and town status in 1952, and Balashikha, a city of Moscow Oblast, took the whole place in 2015.

Where is Zheleznodorozhnyy?

Zheleznodorozhnyy fills the southeast of Balashikha, strung along the Gorkovskoye line, with Savvino at its southern end and Kuchino away to the west.
