Trade Side puts a visitor on the right bank of Velikiy Novgorod, a walk from the Torg churches and the frescoes on Ilyina Street. Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street runs the whole quarter south to north, beginning at the Volkhov bank by its crossing with Nutnaya Street and passing the edge of Yaroslav's Court. Slavno rises at the southern end.
If you would rather be near the Sophia Side, take a room by the foot of Ilyina Street, where the Pedestrian Bridge crosses the Volkhov.

What are the main landmarks in Trade Side?
The landmarks of Trade Side are churches, and the Church of the Transfiguration on Ilyina Street is the one to see first. The building dates from 1374, and Theophanes the Greek painted its walls in 1378, the only frescoes by his hand that survive in place. Znamensky Cathedral rose beside it from 1682, and a Kostroma workshop covered its west wall with a Last Judgment in 1702.
Saint Nicholas Cathedral dates from 1113. The Church of Saint Paraskeva went up on the Torg in 1207 for merchants trading overseas, and Nutnaya Street carries the Church of the Apostle Philip and Saint Nicholas.
What is the history of Trade Side?
Trade Side began as the Slavensky End, settled from the tenth century around the Torg that named it. The Plotnitsky End, the carpenters' quarter, broke away from it in the twelfth century, and the right bank then counted two of the city's five ends. Nutnaya Street enters the chronicle in 1194.
In 1571 the half was set apart for Ivan IV's oprichnina, and gratings appeared on the Great Bridge. The Saint Nicholas Cathedral parish moved to Nutnaya Street in 1962 when the building became a museum, and until 1989 the Philip church alone stayed open in Velikiy Novgorod.

Trade Side runs from Slavno in the south to Plotniki in the north, bounded west by the Volkhov and east by the rampart of the Okolny Gorod.
