Where to stay in Rzhev
The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
The old kremlin ground is the centre of gravity. Ржевский кремль marks the ground the town started from, and the Cathedral of the Theotokos of Okovtsy, the Rzhev Museum of Local Lore and the merchant frontage of Дом купца Гусева all sit within that middle. Rooms sit close together. Anything booked here leaves the memorials and the Volga within a walk.
The station side works for arrivals. Rzhev-Baltiysky railway station puts the Moscow to Riga line at the edge of the town, and the streets around it trade the landmarks of the centre for a short walk to the platforms with luggage. Beds here are practical.
If you are passing through Rzhev between trains rather than staying to walk the memorials, this is the sensible side. Memorial ground makes a third choice. The Monument to City of Military Glory, the Obelisk to liberators of Rzhev and the Братская могила советских воинов stand in open ground away from the commercial streets, with the T-34 and the Soviet locomotive Су set out nearby.
Rzhev is at its quietest there. The Church of the Ascension is the nearest of the older buildings.
About Rzhev
War memory dominates.
What is Rzhev known for?
The Monument to City of Military Glory, the Obelisk to liberators of Rzhev and the Stele in honor of the liberation of Rzhev stand among machines kept as memorials, the T-34 and the Soviet locomotive Су. Merchants came before all that. Дом купца Акима Немилова, Дом купца Павла Мясникова and the Ryabushinsky Brothers Bank survive from the trading town on the upper Volga.
What are the main landmarks in Rzhev?
Churches survive in numbers. The Church of the Protection of the Theotokos, the Church of the Ascension, the Smolenskaya church and the Ансамбль церкви Иоанна Предтечи carry the older register, with the Колокольня standing apart from them. Metal marks the rest.
The T-34, the Soviet locomotive Су, the Gratsinsky Monument and the Памятник революционерам are set through the town, and the Rzhev Museum of Local Lore gathers what the buildings cannot.
What is the history of Rzhev?
The record starts in 1216. Rzhev holds the upper Volga, the highest town standing on that river, with Tver 126 kilometres off and Staritsa 49 kilometres to the north-east. Ржевский кремль marks the beginning. Trade built the merchant face of the town. Дом купца Акима Немилова, Дом купца Павла Мясникова and Дом купца Гусева carry the names of the families that raised them, the Ryabushinsky Brothers Bank put finance on the same streets, and Главный дом belongs to the same listed group.
Faith kept pace. The Church of the Protection of the Theotokos, the Cathedral of the Theotokos of Okovtsy, the Smolenskaya church and the Ансамбль церкви Иоанна Предтечи went up across the quarters, and the Колокольня stands among them. Revolution and war followed.
The building that housed the ржевский военно-революционный штаб is on the register, and the Памятник революционерам and the Statue of Lenin came after it. War left the deeper mark. The Братская могила советских воинов, the Obelisk to liberators of Rzhev, the Stele in honor of the liberation of Rzhev and the Monument to City of Military Glory record the fighting and the men who died of their wounds in the hospitals of the town, while the T-34 and the Soviet locomotive Су stand as machines from those years.
Where is Rzhev?
Water and rail cross here. Rzhev takes about 56 square kilometres of Tver Oblast at the head of the Volga's course, the uppermost town on that river, with Staritsa 49 kilometres to the north-east. Tver lies 126 kilometres off.
The Moscow to Riga highway and railway both pass through, and Rzhev-Baltiysky railway station stands on the second of them.
What is the climate of Rzhev?
The young Volga gives no shelter. Rzhev sits well inland in the temperate band of the northern hemisphere, and the river is still small this far up its course, so winter arrives without the moderation a coast would bring. Snow settles long.
Walking between the Cathedral of the Theotokos of Okovtsy and the Monument to City of Military Glory is easier in the short warm months.
How do you get to Rzhev?
Rzhev-Baltiysky railway station is the arrival point. Trains use the line between Moscow and Riga, which runs through the town beside the highway of the same pairing, so both approaches converge here rather than stopping short at the Volga. Staritsa is 49 kilometres off.
From the platforms the Monument to City of Military Glory and the Cathedral of the Theotokos of Okovtsy are the landmarks to steer by.
