Where to stay in Kamyshin
The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
The old streets hold the beds. The Historical center of Kamyshin is the district the town's protected buildings sit in, and staying inside it puts Altuhov's House on Oktyabrskaya, Дом Якова Шнайдера and Жилой дом Пономарёва within the same short round of streets. Никольский кафедральный собор is the marker. Naberezhnaya Street 74 stands on the embankment side of the town, where the Kamyshinka River comes into the Volgograd Reservoir, and a room on that edge trades the shopfronts for the bank.
Zelenaya street 30 and Respublikanskaya Street 74 belong to the same protected list. Arrival shapes the second option. Железнодорожный вокзал is the town's station building and a listed one, so a bed near it suits anyone whose visit is bracketed by trains rather than by the older streets. A single walk takes in the listed buildings.
Kamyshin covers a modest area on the right bank, which keeps Пожарная часть, Училище духовное and the Уездное управление воинского начальника inside a walk of most central rooms, whatever corner of the centre they are booked in. Братская могила советских воинов, погибших в период Сталинградской битвы lies within the town as well, and Памятник Дмитрию Солунскому stands among the civic monuments. Proletarskaya Street 40 completes the set.
About Kamyshin
Two waters meet here.
What is Kamyshin known for?
The Volga River widens into the Volgograd Reservoir along Kamyshin's right bank, and the Kamyshinka River empties into it at the town's estuary, which is the arrangement the whole settlement is built around. Merchant houses survived. The Historical center of Kamyshin gathers Altuhov's House on Oktyabrskaya, Подворье купца Голова and Жилой дом Синеева, while Никольский кафедральный собор serves as the town's cathedral.
The Zemstvo of Kamyshin ran the district from here.
What are the main landmarks in Kamyshin?
Streets carry the listings. Zelenaya street 30, Naberezhnaya Street 74, Respublikanskaya Street 74 and Proletarskaya Street 40 are protected addresses rather than monuments, and the Historical center of Kamyshin holds them together as one district. Merchants left their own. Подворье купца Голова, Доходный дом купца Фёдорова с флигелем, Жилой дом Синеева and Жилой дом Пономарёва survive alongside Altuhov's House. Никольский кафедральный собор and Памятник Дмитрию Солунскому close the list.
What is the history of Kamyshin?
Kamyshin dates from 1668. The town grew where the Kamyshinka River reaches the Volga River, on the right bank that later became the shore of the Volgograd Reservoir, and that river mouth is the reason the settlement was placed here at all. County business followed.
The Zemstvo of Kamyshin, the House of the county police department in Kamyshin, the Уездное по воинским делам присутствие and the Уездное управление воинского начальника all belonged to a town that administered the district around it. Дом Якова Шнайдера housed the Городская управа. Trade and schooling left their own buildings. Училище духовное and the Former Primary School, Kamyshin mark the town's teaching, while Доходный дом купца Фёдорова с флигелем and Подворье купца Голова record the merchants who paid for much of the centre. Пожарная часть served the same streets. Fighting reached the region.
The Братская могила советских воинов, погибших в период Сталинградской битвы holds those who died in it, and the grave is counted among the town's protected sites rather than kept apart from them. Volgograd Oblast is the wider frame, and Kamyshin has kept the same right-bank position through every one of those changes.
Where is Kamyshin?
The right bank is everything. Kamyshin holds the right bank of the Volgograd Reservoir, the widened stretch of the Volga River that fronts the town, and the Kamyshinka River finishes its run in the estuary the settlement was built around. Volgograd Oblast surrounds it.
The built-up ground is small enough that the Historical center of Kamyshin, Никольский кафедральный собор and the protected street addresses all fall within one walkable stretch.
What is the climate of Kamyshin?
Cold and warm, not wet and dry. The temperate band of the northern hemisphere puts Kamyshin in a four-season year, and the broad water of the Volgograd Reservoir along the right bank is the only feature the record gives that could soften its edges. The Kamyshinka River counts for less.
Its estuary is small beside the reservoir, and the Volga River rather than the tributary is what governs the water's effect on the town.
How do you get to Kamyshin?
Trains have their own listed building. Железнодорожный вокзал is Kamyshin's station and one of the protected structures on the town's heritage list, which makes the arrival point a piece of the sightseeing rather than a detour from it. Water runs alongside. The Volgograd Reservoir fronts the right bank along the whole length of the town, so approaches by land come from Volgograd Oblast behind it.
The Historical center of Kamyshin is the district most arrivals head for.
