What is Kigali Province known for?

Kigali Province is known first as the seat of Rwanda's capital. It is the political and commercial core of the country, and few travellers reach Rwanda without passing through the city of Kigali at its centre. The draw is the hills.

What is the history of Kigali Province?

Kigali began in 1907 as a German administrative outpost near the centre of Rwanda. For decades it stayed a minor administrative centre, secondary to Huye, where the main administrative focus of the territory then sat. Independence changed that.

When Rwanda became independent in 1962 the city of Kigali was made the national capital, and the administrative weight shifted away from Huye onto the hills of what is now Kigali Province, a young urban centre grown into the country's primate city.
