Jarwal keeps the Qishla, a hostel Sultan Abdul Hamid built in 1318 AH from his own funds for poor pilgrims. Al-Masjid Al-Haram lies to the south-east. The Clock Tower Museum and the Al-Zaher Palace Museum are among Makkah's museums beyond the quarter.

Jarwal grew as part of Makkah, north-west of Al-Masjid Al-Haram. Its name was already in use in the eleventh century AH, and for a time it marked the last edge of Makkah's built area, beyond Al-Shubaika. It holds the well of Tuwa, where the Prophet is said to have stayed three days before entering Makkah on the Farewell Pilgrimage.
