What is the history of Touba?
Touba was founded by a great Sufi teacher. In the late nineteenth century the holy man Amadou Bamba, who taught peace and hard work under French colonial rule, chose this spot on the plain for a holy city and founded the Mouride brotherhood. The French sent him into exile.
The colonial rulers, fearing his following, sent Bamba away to distant lands for years, but his fame only grew, and his followers awaited his return. A great mosque rose over his tomb. After the founder's death his sons and followers raised it vast and high, one of the largest in Africa, and the city grew around it into a place all its own.
Millions come each year. The yearly pilgrimage, the Grand Magal, draws great crowds of the faithful to Touba, and the city lives by its faith, its mosque, and its own law, ruled by the Mouride caliph. The great minaret still rises high.

Touba has a hot, dry Sahelian climate. Scorching dry weather holds much of the year on the plain, with fierce heat and dust in the long dry season and a short rainy spell in late summer. The dry season bakes the land.
