Leninabad was the name until 1991. Buildings raised under the Soviet Union give whole blocks of the city their pattern, and the hotels among them are plain rather than distinguished, which is the trade for standing near the middle of Khujand. Осорхонаи ба номи академик Бобоҷон Ғафуров is the third collection.
Anyone staying more than a night has time for all three museums, and the compact forty square kilometres of the city keep the walk between them short. The province is administered from here.

What is the history of Khujand?
The name changed twice within living memory. Khujand carried the name Leninabad from 1936 until 1991, the years that fall inside the Soviet Union, and the city's name is also sometimes spelled Khodjent. Хуҷанд is the official form. Each of the three names points at a different administration, and the city underneath them has stayed where it is, in the western portion of the Ferghana Valley.
A Soviet story attached itself to the place. Khujand was spoken of during the Soviet Union as Lenin's Favorite City, and whether that was true or an urban legend is not established, which is itself a fair description of how much of the period is remembered. The museums took up the record.
The Historical Museum of Sughd, the Historical Museum of Sughd Region and Осорхонаи ба номи академик Бобоҷон Ғафуров hold what the province has gathered, and the three together are the reason the city serves as the cultural centre of its part of the valley. In 1991 the change went the other way. Leninabad was dropped, and Khujand became again what it had been, the capital of Viloyati Sughd and the second city of Tajikistan.

The Ferghana Valley shapes the year. Khujand lies in the western portion of that valley, within the temperate band, and enclosed valley air makes the difference between the hot and cold halves of the year sharper than an open plain would. Winter is the harder half.
