What is the history of El Kef?
El Kef has crowned its mountain since ancient times. In the days of Carthage and Rome the town was Sicca, famous for a great temple of the goddess Astarte, and the Romans left it cisterns, baths, and an arch that still stand on the slope. Christians and Byzantines held it after.
They raised a basilica in the old town and a fortress on the height, and the town kept its place on the mountain road. The Ottomans made it a stronghold of the frontier. They built a great kasbah of two forts on the summit to guard the road from Algeria, and the town grew around the citadel, a market for the wheat plains below.
In our own age it played its part in the nation's story. El Kef was a centre of the fight for Tunisia's freedom and a cradle of its cinema, and its old lanes still climb to the fort. The kasbah still crowns the hill.

El Kef lies in the highlands of northwestern Tunisia, near the Algerian border. The town climbs the steep slope of a limestone mountain, the Jebel Dyr, above the wheat plains, in the high cool country of the Tell. Bare cliffs rise above the town.

El Kef has a cool highland climate. Warm, dry summers cross the mountain town, and the winters turn cold and wet, with rain and even snow on the heights, sharper than the coast below. Snow dusts the cliffs in winter.

El Kef lies in the northwest of Tunisia near the Algerian border. Roads climb to it from Tunis over the wheat plains, and mountain roads run west to the border and south to Kasserine. Buses reach the highland towns around.
