For centuries Monastir lived behind its walls as a quiet town of fishermen and olive growers on the Sahel. One man remade the town. Habib Bourguiba, who led Tunisia to freedom and ruled it for thirty years, was born in Monastir, and he lavished care on the town of his birth, building a grand mausoleum for his family and turning the old port into a bright resort.
