What is the history of Hammamet?
Hammamet grew where Rome once bathed. The Romans built a town and baths on this coast at Pupput, and its name, from the Arabic for baths, still recalls them, while a Berber and Arab town rose later by the shore. The sea guarded the town.
In the middle ages the Hafsid rulers walled the medina and raised the kasbah over the water against the corsairs and the sea raiders. By the last century it became a place of artists. A wealthy Romanian built a famous villa in the gardens above the beach, and writers and painters gathered at Hammamet, drawn by its light and its jasmine.
Tourists followed the artists. The town became the first beach resort of Tunisia, its old medina ringed by hotels and new marinas, but the walled town and the kasbah still stand by the sea. The jasmine still scents the streets.
